Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, is one of the most enduring and most monetized characters in Chinese culture.

The story Sun Wukong is born from a stone egg on the mythical Flower-Fruit Mountain, gains supernatural powers through Taoist training, and declares himself "Great Sage Equal to Heaven" after causing havoc in the celestial court — stealing peaches of immortality, erasing his name from the register of death, and fighting off heaven's armies. Buddha eventually traps him under a mountain for 500 years. He's freed on the condition that he escort the monk Tang Sanzang (Xuanzang) on a pilgrimage to India to retrieve Buddhist scriptures, joined by the gluttonous pig-spirit Zhu Bajie and the river-ogre Sha Wujing. The journey — 81 tribulations, countless demons, and a magic headband that lets Tang Sanzang keep Sun Wukong in line is the backbone of the 16th-century novel.
