Why a Computer Science Degree Is No Longer a Sure Thing in Africa's Job Market

Chisom Okafor graduated from the University of Lagos in 2024 with a second-class upper in Computer Science. She did everything right. She built apps during her 200-level year. She earned a Google Africa Developer certification before her final semester. She completed a six-month internship with a Lagos fintech startup where her supervisor told her she was "one of the best interns we've ever had." She sent her CV to forty companies before graduation. Then forty more. Then she stopped counting.

"People talk about tech like it is the one guaranteed path," says Okafor, now 23, who earns what she calls "manageable money" doing freelance mobile development gigs sourced through Upwork. "Nobody told us the jobs would be this hard to find. Not our lecturers. Not our parents. Nobody."

Across Africa — in Lagos, Nairobi, Kampala, Accra, and Cairo — a similar story is playing out with increasing frequency. The computer science degree, long sold to African students and their families as the surest ticket to middle-class stability, is no longer delivering the guarantee it once promised. A structural transformation is underway in the global technology job market, and Africa's youngest and most ambitious graduates are discovering, often after years of sacrifice to earn those degrees, that the rules have changed.

The numbers are blunt. African technology companies cut a record 2,574 jobs in the first half of 2026 alone — a 236 percent increase from the same period a year earlier — as artificial intelligence adoption, banking consolidation, and cost-cutting measures reshaped the continent's employment landscape, according to TechCabal Insights. Globally, the picture is no better. By mid-2026, approximately 164,271 tech jobs had been lost in 435 layoffs worldwide, with an average of 874 people losing their jobs every single day — up from 674 per day in 2025. And at the entry level, where African graduates compete hardest, the damage has been most severe. Software developers aged 22 to 25 saw employment fall nearly 20 percent from their late 2022 peak by mid-2025, according to Stanford Digital Economy Lab research.

This is not a temporary correction. It is the beginning of a structural shift — one that Africa's universities, families, and students are only just beginning to reckon with.


The Promise That Built a Generation

To understand how jarring this moment feels, it helps to understand how absolute the promise once seemed.

For much of the 2010s and early 2020s, African governments, parents, university marketing departments, and development organizations made a near-universal bet. They told a generation of African students that technology was the path — the one career corridor where African talent could compete globally, earn dollar-denominated salaries from wherever they sat, and build the kind of economic security their parents had spent their lives chasing. Companies like Andela validated the pitch with their entire business model: recruit and train African software engineers, connect them to global tech companies, and prove that a developer in Lagos or Nairobi could do the same work as one in London or San Francisco.

It worked, for a while. Andela graduates went to work for companies like GitHub, Coursera, and Cloudflare. Coding bootcamps multiplied across Nairobi, Lagos, and Accra. University computer science programmes expanded their intake. Parents in Kampala and Kumasi told their children, with more certainty than they said almost anything else, that if you learned to code, you would be fine.

The African tech funding boom of 2021 and 2022 appeared to confirm everything. In 2022, Africa's tech ecosystem raised a record $4.65 billion across 941 deals. Startups were hiring aggressively. Salaries were rising. The continent's tech workers — the engineers, product managers, data scientists, and QA testers — felt, for the first time in many of their careers, genuinely in demand.

Then came the correction.


When the Floor Dropped Out

By 2023, as higher interest rates and investor caution set in, African tech funding plummeted 37 percent to $2.92 billion. It deteriorated further in 2024, with total funding dropping to $2.24 billion — less than half of the 2022 peak. The number of active investors operating on the continent fell by nearly 50 percent between 2022 and 2023.

The funding collapse triggered a hiring freeze that turned into an outright reversal. Between January 2023 and March 2026, at least 56 distinct layoff events swept across the continent, resulting in nearly 5,000 disclosed job losses. Fintech recorded the most layoff events, accounting for 35 percent of the total. E-commerce companies hit harder in raw headcount, accounting for 2,872 disclosed job losses — a reflection of how many people those companies employed in warehouses, logistics networks, and last-mile operations.

The names attached to these cuts were not obscure. Companies including Jumia, Zap Africa, and Egypt's Breadfast reduced their technology, product, and marketing teams as AI tools took over operational workflows previously handled by employees. Branch, the digital lending platform operating across Kenya and Nigeria, disengaged employees in May 2026 despite reporting $30 million in profit — a signal that these cuts were not driven by financial distress but by a deliberate recalibration of how much human labour a technology company actually needs.

It was this last detail — profitable companies laying off engineers — that shook the African tech community most profoundly. A company losing money cuts staff to survive. A company making money cuts staff to show investors it can run leaner. That is a different kind of message entirely. It says: the value of your labour, as a software engineer, is being recalculated. And the entity doing the recalculating is not a recession. It is AI.


AI Is Not Coming — It Is Already Here

Artificial intelligence emerged as one of the biggest drivers of workforce reductions across African tech companies, with startups replacing routine human tasks with automated software. But the more important shift is subtler than any single layoff announcement.

What AI is doing to entry-level software engineering is not simply replacing one type of job with another. It is fundamentally transforming the nature of the work itself. For decades, software engineering was primarily about writing code — translating requirements into syntax, building applications line by line, debugging and testing manually. That model is rapidly becoming obsolete. AI tools now generate boilerplate code, build API integrations, scaffold frontend components, and even write unit tests with minimal human intervention. The role of the engineer is shifting from writing code to orchestrating AI tools, evaluating their output, and solving problems that machines cannot yet handle.

This means companies need fewer junior developers to produce the same output. It means the entry-level position, historically the gateway through which every programmer built their career, is becoming a smaller door. The shift is compressed by the sheer volume of graduates emerging from African universities and bootcamps at the same time as AI capabilities are accelerating.

"There was a time where we told everyone to code and we thought that was a very safe role," Kory Kantenga, LinkedIn's Head of Economics for the Americas, said recently. "And now we see for folks who graduate with computer science degrees, unemployment is relatively elevated."

In Africa, this dynamic is made more acute by the scale of the talent pipeline the boom years created. Universities expanded their CS programmes aggressively. Bootcamps churned out graduates by the thousands. The supply of trained engineers grew. The demand for entry-level roles did not grow with it — and with AI handling an increasing share of entry-level work, the gap has widened further.

Tunde Olowe, a tech industry veteran, frames it without euphemism: "Diaspora-based African talent now have to work twice as hard because they are competing with AI and not the next engineer. And unfortunately, AI is cheaper than anyone."


The Specialties That Are Hurting Most

Not all engineering disciplines are suffering equally. The picture across Africa's tech labour market shows sharp divergence between roles that AI can automate and roles where human judgment remains irreplaceable — at least for now.

Front-end web development and mobile app development — the skills most commonly taught in African bootcamps and introductory university programmes — are under the heaviest pressure. These are the disciplines where AI code-generation tools are most capable, where the output is most standardised, and where entry-level workers are most directly competing with automated pipelines.

Basic backend development, particularly the writing of CRUD applications, API wrappers, and database query scripts, is similarly squeezed. The junior backend engineer who spent their bootcamp learning to connect a Node.js server to a MongoDB database is discovering that a product manager with a decent AI tool can now do a version of that job.

What is holding up, and in some cases actively growing, is more specialised. Microsoft's Africa Development Center in Lagos is actively recruiting for AI engineering roles — positions that require understanding machine learning pipelines, natural language processing, and model evaluation — with salaries reaching ₦150 million at the senior level. Paystack is building fraud prevention systems that require domain-specific expertise in African payment behaviour that no American AI model was trained to understand. MTN Nigeria is building network analytics capabilities that require engineers who understand the specific texture of African telecommunications infrastructure.

The pattern is consistent: roles that require deep domain knowledge of African contexts — how money moves, how networks perform, how users behave, what languages and dialects matter, what health data looks like in a Ugandan clinic — are more defensible than roles that require generic software engineering skills the same the world over.

The Brookings Institution's Foresight Africa 2026 report estimates there could be 230 million digital jobs available on the continent if countries invest decisively in building the right skills base. But the nature of those jobs is changing faster than most university curricula can track.


What Schools Are — and Are Not — Doing

Africa's leading technology universities have begun to respond, with varying degrees of urgency.

The African Leadership University, with campuses in Kigali and Mauritius, redesigned its technology curriculum around what it calls "applied problem-solving" — de-emphasising the syntax-level coding instruction that AI tools have made largely redundant, and investing instead in systems thinking, product strategy, entrepreneurship, and AI literacy. The philosophy is that a graduate who understands what problems are worth solving and how to direct AI tools to solve them is more valuable than a graduate who knows how to write the code themselves.

Carnegie Mellon University Africa in Kigali, where Bill Gates met students during his July visit, runs the Upanzi Network — a research initiative focused on digital public infrastructure solutions for African governments. Its graduates are not competing for entry-level positions at Lagos fintech startups. They are building the digital systems that African governments will run their countries on.

Rwanda's own Coding Academy, a government initiative that combines technical training with entrepreneurship education, has positioned its graduates explicitly as builders rather than employees. The mindset that Rwanda has been engineering into its students is not "learn to code so you can get a job." It is "learn to code so you can build something that creates jobs."

That distinction matters enormously.

Most African universities have not moved as quickly. Across the continent, computer science programmes still teach in languages and frameworks chosen for their historical relevance rather than their current market value. Curricula designed for a 2015 job market are producing graduates for a 2026 one. The gap is visible in hiring data, in graduate unemployment rates, and in the quiet anxiety of final-year students who are beginning to sense, for the first time, that the path they were promised may be narrower than they were told.


The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything

The most important reframe happening across Africa's tech talent conversation is not about which programming languages to teach. It is about what a technology career is actually for.

"The only thing that gives anybody an advantage today in the world of AI is good attitude, agency, extreme reliability, forward thinking, and being solution-minded," Olowe argues. "Not technical skills that AI can take away."

This is not an argument against technical skills. It is an argument that technical skills, alone, are no longer a career. They are a tool. What a career requires — what it has always required, but what the coding-boom obscured — is judgment: the ability to understand what problem matters, to choose the right tool for it, to work with other people across disciplines, to adapt when the tools change.

Bill Gates put the same point differently during his Rwanda visit: "What makes me optimistic is that the next generation of innovators isn't waiting for opportunities — they are creating them." The students he found most compelling at UGHE and Carnegie Mellon Africa were not the ones who could recite algorithms. They were the ones who had identified a real problem in their community — a gap in health data, a broken supply chain, a missing financial service — and were using technology to address it.

That orientation — technology as a means to a specific local end, rather than as an end in itself — is what separates the African engineers who will thrive in the AI era from those who will be displaced by it. The global talent shortage is estimated to reach 85 million people by 2030, with an opportunity cost of $8.5 trillion per year if skills gaps persist, according to Korn Ferry. Africa, with its demographic scale, does not lack people. It needs people with the right combination of technical fluency and problem ownership.


What the Data Suggests Students Should Do Now

The picture is not hopeless. It is clarifying. The African engineers who are finding work, building companies, and generating income in 2026 share identifiable characteristics — and they are learnable.

They have specific domain expertise alongside technical skills. A software engineer who understands agricultural supply chains in West Africa, or maternal health data in East Africa, or Islamic finance compliance in North Africa, is not competing with AI. They are directing it. Domain knowledge is the moat that generic technical skills cannot provide.

They can demonstrate work, not credentials. Branch's decision to cut engineers despite profitability signals that companies are no longer paying for the potential implied by a degree. They are paying for demonstrated output. A GitHub repository with real projects, a live app with real users, a business that solves a real problem — these are more compelling to employers and clients than a second-class upper from a prestigious university.

They build in public. The African engineers landing international remote contracts in 2026 are overwhelmingly those who made themselves visible — writing on LinkedIn about what they are building, sharing technical insights on Twitter/X, contributing to open source projects that gave them verifiable public records of competence.

They have moved toward AI collaboration rather than AI competition. The engineers being displaced are those who write code manually in roles that AI tools have automated. The engineers being hired are those who know how to direct AI tools — writing precise prompts, evaluating AI output, integrating AI into products, fine-tuning models on local data.


The Larger Warning — and the Larger Opportunity

There is a harder conversation embedded in all of this, one that African parents, educators, and policymakers have not yet fully had.

The idea that any single major, any single credential, any single skill set can guarantee security across a career that will span four or five decades was always a simplification. It was a useful simplification — it channelled a generation of African talent into technology at a moment when that channel was genuinely productive. But it was never the complete picture.

What Rwanda understood — what Bill Gates observed and reflected on during his visit — is that the goal is not to produce people who have learned a skill. The goal is to produce people who know how to learn. A student who graduates from UGHE knowing how to think about health systems, how to navigate institutions, how to identify a gap and design a response to it, will find work in 2026, in 2030, and in 2040. Because the specific tools will change, but the underlying work of solving important problems in human communities will not.

Google's Digital Skills for Africa programme has trained over 10 million people since 2017. Smart Africa aims to train thousands of public servants and professionals in digital skills through 2026. These are valuable programmes. But a person who has completed a digital skills certificate and knows how to build a WordPress site is not, in 2026, meaningfully more employable than they were before AI arrived. What they need, and what Africa's education system increasingly must provide, is not training in tools. It is training in thinking.

The computer science degree is not dying. The version of it that promised a guaranteed job in exchange for four years of syntax memorization — that version deserved to end. What replaces it, across Africa's best universities and coding academies, is something more honest and more powerful: a rigorous education in how to use technology to solve problems that actually exist, for people who actually live here.

The African engineers who understand that are not struggling. They are building. And the gap they are leaving behind — between the graduates who got that education and those who did not — will define the continent's technology workforce for the decade ahead.


What This Means for Africa's Digital Economy

The transformation underway is not only a warning—it is a signal of what is possible. Africa's digital economy, projected to reach $180 billion by 2028, needs engineers who can design systems that work for African realities, not abstract global templates. The continent's young population—the youngest in the world—is not a liability. It is an advantage, provided the education system produces graduates who can think critically, solve problems locally, and adapt to rapid technological change. The future of work in Africa will not be built by those who memorize code. It will be built by those who understand why the code matters.
